Job Title: Assistant Commissioner for Middle School Athletics, SCHSL
Reports To: Commissioner, South Carolina High School League (SCHSL)
Position Overview:
The Assistant Commissioner for Middle School Athletics plays a pivotal role in overseeing and managing all aspects of middle school athletics governed by the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL). This position ensures strict adherence to SCHSL rules and regulations and adherence, where necessary, to National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) rules and regulations while fostering an enriching experience for student-athletes, coaches, and officials. The Assistant Commissioner for Middle School Athletics will also offer vital support to the Commissioners overseeing high school basketball and football programs.
Key Responsibilities:
Middle School Athletics Oversight:
- Administer and enforce transfer and eligibility policies for middle school student-athletes.
- Ensure full compliance with SCHSL and, where necessary, NFHS rules and regulations for all middle school sports.
- Manage disciplinary actions, including ejections, and coordinate officials’ assignments for middle school athletics.
Communication & Community Engagement:
- Develop and disseminate newsletters to member schools, administrators, and key stakeholders.
- Plan and organize educational workshops, summits, and events to enhance the middle school athletic experience.
- Serve as the primary liaison for the Middle School Task Force, offering guidance and support.
League Administration & Operations:
- Oversee League passes, membership processes, and documentation for middle school programs.
- Coordinate state invitational formats and manage site selections for designated middle school sports.
Support for High School Athletics:
- Assist the high school Commissioners in managing administrative and operational duties related to high school basketball and football programs.
Technology & Media Engagement:
- Leverage tools such as Google Docs, Cognito Forms, Microsoft Excel and other digital platforms to streamline processes related to eligibility, transfers, surveys, and registration.
- Maintain and update relevant sections of the SCHSL website with up-to-date news, resources, and information specific to middle school athletics.
- Boost SCHSL’s social media presence by sharing key updates, announcements, and student-athlete achievements from middle school sports.
Qualifications:
- Proven expertise in middle school and high school coaching and/or athletics administration.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience in drafting newsletters, reports, and educational materials.
- Strong proficiency with technology, website management, and social media tools.
- Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities while ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills to engage with school administrators, coaches, officials, and other stakeholders.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree or better preferred.
- Applicants must have a valid South Carolina driver’s license.
Work Environment & Expectations:
- Occasional travel required for meetings, events, and site visits which may include overnight stay.
- Availability for evening and weekend work to support athletic events and conferences.

Salary and Benefits
This is a full-time, 52-week position as defined by the SCHSL Employee Handbook. The annual salary range for the Assistant Commissioner for Middle School Athletics will be $75K – $85K and includes comprehensive benefits including paid holidays, vacation/sick leave, state retirement, and health insurance.
