Executive Committee approves activities changes

Approved Activities Items

The following changes were approved by the Executive Committee on April 19, 2022, and will go into effect on July 1, 2022, for the 2022-23 School Year.

  • Proposal from the League Staff to insert language into the cheer section of the rules and regulations to address music being copyrighted as required by law. To comply with copyright laws, competative cheer teams must have their performance music licensed to participate in the state qualifier. The proof of purchase will be uploaded on the intent to participate form for the state qualifier. A list of music providers can be found at usacheer.org/music.
  • Proposal from SC Swim Coaches Association to adjust the minimum consideration time for qualifying in the AAA and AAAA State Meets. The new multiplier for consideration times in both AAA and AAAA will move from 1.10 to 1.14.
  • Proposal from the SC Football Coaches Association to implement a mercy rule in varsity football. In football, a running clock will go into effect once one team is up by 42 or more points at halftime or at any point beyond halftime. Additionally, the approval included the request the league office staff work with the SC Football Officials Association to clarify exactly when the clock would stop during the running clock. Once the parameters for the running clock are established this information will be communicated to all member schools.
  • Proposal from the SC Basketball Coaches Association to allow for use of the shot clock in invitationals and showcase events that choose to use it. Schools will be allowed to choose to use a shot clock during any invitational (including tournaments) or showcase that they host. A shot clock may not be used outside of these events during regular season or post-season play. This approval is for two years.
  • Proposal from Spartanburg District 6 (Dorman High School) to add Boys Volleyball to the fall season for the 2022-23 School Year. Beginning in the fall of 2022 schools can offer boys volleyball as a league-sanctioned sport. There will be no post-season play for the 2022 season and beginning with the 2023-24 school year the league will offer a State Championship in boys volleyball provided the sport meets the required number of schools participating to offer a championship. With the sport being sanctioned for the 2022-23 season, all participants must meet eligibility standards and be submitted on a certificate of eligibility. Head coaches will have to attend a league-sponsored rules clinic and certified officials must be used for all varsity contests.
