Four Quarter Split for Football
Four Quarter Split for Football
Proposal and Protocols:
Coaches may assign their athletes to participate weekly in one of two options.
Option 1: Four Sub-Varsity or Four Varsity Quarters only.
Option 2: Four Quarters may be split over Sub-Varsity and Varsity contests on consecutive days. The current 3-day contest separation rule for football would still apply.
● This split must be limited to only the first half of the sub varsity contest and only the second half of the varsity contest.
● Participants must remove helmet and shoulder pads at half time of the sub varsity contest. Participants would not be allowed to wear helmets and shoulder pads in the first half of the varsity contest. Thus, preventing accidental interjection into the contest.
● Participation reports must be turned in weekly to the HS athletic director or school administrator indicating any player deemed a split participant for the week. This should be done prior to the player participating.
● No more than 8 players per week may be deemed split participants. The 8 players may change week to week.
● It may not be agreed upon that the sub-varsity contest can be shortened in any way to allow player availability for the varsity contest.
Oversite:
Head coaches and ADs are responsible for oversight. If found that a school violates the rule accidentally or intentionally it must be reported to the SCHSL with appropriate evidence.
Violations and Accountability:
Violating teams will be deemed to have played an ineligible player and accountability will be in line with current rules and accountability set forth by the SCHSL. First offense is a $500 fine and forfeiture of the varsity competition. The association recommends that verified violations to this rule and the ramifications for not be appealable at any level. A team may appeal false accusations and defend them with appropriate video or electronic imaging evidence.
